Ray Colon Photography Critique

Thanks Ray for submitting these images for critique.   What makes the top image less impacting than the bottom one?  It is the lighting of course.  The main light in the first image is coming from above the bride’s head, and because it is coming from a bit too high a position, is creating an unattractive [...]

Joshua and Shelley Engagement Session

This weekend I am photographing the wedding for Joshua and Shelley.   As is my custom,  I did an engagement session for them a month ago at my Benicia Studio.  The engagement session is a critical element in getting to know my clients, and in finding out and defining their personal style.  In my initial interview,  [...]

Amanda Huebner

Thank you Amanda for sharing this adorable image.  I like the fact that you are using a soft light source.  I felt this image could benefit from cropping it close to the face and making it a long horizontal skinny print.  The bottom half of the image competes for attention, and does not add to [...]

Educational Workshop – Canada

I recently had the opportunity of teaching a two day boudoir workshop for my friend Glen Flett at his studio in the Toronto, Canada area.  Through live demonstrations, slides and lecture, I taught the many aspects of lighting, posing, and marketing the boudoir image.  One of the concepts I taught was with regard to posing [...]

“May – Mental Health Awareness Month”

Whether you are young or old, rich or poor, mental health issues like Depression, Schizoaffective disorders, Alzheimer’s and Bipolar disorders plague someone you know.  Unlike Cancer or Heart Disease, the aforementioned diseases are often times left undiagnosed or by virtue of the stigma associated with them, left untreated.  I have family and friends who are [...]

Isaac – Don’t ask them to laugh- Give them a reason to do so!

Recently we had the honor of photographing Isaac in the studio.  In this video Michael is playing with Isaac and engaging his great expressions.  The light source is a large window just to the right (on the red background) and on the left on the white wall.  I’ve used a 70-200 mm lens with an [...]

Alecia Johnson Critique

First, what a beautiful baby! Sorry, couldn’t help myself. I am absolutely captivated by the expression. You are to be commended for capturing the decisive moment. Expression is the “cake” great lighting, composition, etc are the icing. Lighting is a bit weak. I would like to see a bit more separation between the subject and the background. This can be done with the addition of a hair light, or striplight. I personally use Chimera Hot lights and love the fact that I can actually see where the light if falling on the subject. Try using the modeling lamps only, as a way to train your eye. Additionally, I wouldn’t recommend doing the coloring in of the eyes. It is a bit (in my opinion, and in my opinion only) cheezy. With those things said, don’t beat yourself up. Your image is lovely! It is captivating, and captures the essence of this little one beautifully. Congratulations.

“Put it in a Rocket Ship”

All of us at one time or another have had some sort of disagreement with a family member.  Maybe they said or did something that upset us, and we didn’t talk to them for a while.  When does it cross over from being just a normal disagreement to one of a more serious nature? I [...]
